Your shopping bills could be set to go up from today as a new law makes it compulsory for supermarkets to charge 5p for singe-use carrier bags.
It has been hailed a “fantastic” move to cut litter and harm to wildlife in England, although experts say the scheme may not be as successful as elsewhere.
England is the last of the home nations to bring in a charge for larger retailers, including Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Asda, handing out plastic carrier bags.
